Red eye flight definition

What’s a red eye flight / how to define a red eye flight? It is a travel term commonly used to refer to those flights that leave late in the evening and arrive at the destination early the following morning.

While sometimes used synonymously with an overnight flight, red-eye has sometimes been defined more specifically to mean shorter overnight flights where there isn’t sufficient time to get a full nights rest. Without enough sleep the traveler may arrive with red eyes.

A red eye flight typically goes from west to east, but some people call overnight flights going westward (typically international) red eyes as well.
